Is a $30 mask a scam compared with a $400 one?

Not automatically. The expensive ones usually have more diodes, better fit, and published irradiance. The cheap ones can still deliver a useful dose if the wavelengths are real and the mask sits close to the skin. The scam is any mask, at any price, that refuses to tell you its wavelengths.

Can red light damage my eyes?

Red and near-infrared at these powers are not the danger. Bright LEDs of any colour an inch from the eye are uncomfortable and some people get headaches. Use the eye shields or keep eyes closed. Blue light close to the eyes for long sessions is the one to be careful with.

Do I need the conductive gel?

Yes. Without it the current does not pass properly, the session does nothing, and the device can sting. Any water-based gel or a generous layer of a plain hydrating serum works.

Microcurrent or EMS, what is the difference?

Microcurrent is sub-sensory and works on muscle tone. EMS is a stronger pulse you can feel, causing visible contraction. EMS gives a bigger immediate effect and more people find it uncomfortable. Neither changes bone or fat.

Is scalp massage alone enough?

Small studies show a few minutes of daily massage increases hair thickness a little over months. It costs nothing, so do it. It will not match red light plus minoxidil.

Can I use it with minoxidil or finasteride?

Yes, and combined use is what most trials and dermatologists recommend. Light is an addition, not a replacement.

Is near-infrared dangerous because I can't see it?

No. At consumer powers it is heat you barely feel. The reason to respect it is the same as red: do not stare into LEDs at close range for long sessions.

Does more LEDs mean more results?

More LEDs at the right wavelengths, close to the skin, means more dose per minute. More LEDs of random colours means a brighter light show.

Does it burn or tan the skin?

No. Red and near-infrared carry no UV at all, so they cannot burn or tan. What you feel is mild warmth from the diodes.

Bare skin or after products?

Bare. Clean, dry skin during the session so the light reaches skin, not product. Serums and moisturiser after.

Can I use microcurrent every day for years?

Yes, the trials and the brands say so, with the standard exclusions: pacemakers, implanted electronics, epilepsy, pregnancy, metal implants in the face.

Do high-speed dryers damage hair less?

Yes, because you use less heat for less time. The dryer itself is not magic; the physics is.

Should I buy patches or just use my mask longer?

A mask that reaches the under-eye area with the eye shields in place already covers it. Patches are for people without a mask or who want the neck-and-eye routine while doing something else.

For how the neck feels and looks for the rest of the day, yes. For long-term texture, the light does the work and the heat is a pleasant extra.

Does 'negative ion' technology matter?

It reduces static and frizz a little. It does not reduce heat damage. Treat it as a nice extra, not a reason to pay more.

What temperature should I use?

Fine or damaged hair: 150 to 170 C. Normal: 170 to 190. Coarse: up to 210 and no higher. Always a heat protectant. If the curl holds at a lower setting, use the lower setting.

The listing says 660 nm but the light looks pink. Is it lying?

Not necessarily. Cameras render 660 nm oddly and many wraps mix in 850 nm, which is invisible and shows as a faint glow. Judge it by the published numbers and the diode layout, not by the photo.

Does it matter if I feel heat?

Some warmth is normal, from the diodes themselves. If heat is the main sensation and the light is dim, you bought a heating pad.

Why do dermatologists sound lukewarm?

Because they see the gap between trial results and marketing every day, and because a home device is weaker than what they use in clinic. Most will tell you a good mask is a reasonable addition to the basics, and a poor substitute for them.

Are the studies funded by device makers?

Many are, which is a real limitation and one reason to expect less than the headline. The independent literature on photobiomodulation for wound healing and skin is large and pre-dates the consumer boom.

Can I leave a mask on for an hour?

You can; you will not get more. You may get a headache from the brightness and you will certainly get bored, which is how devices end up in drawers.

Bare skin, or over what I already use?

Bare. Clean and dry. Anything on the skin can block or scatter the light, and heat plus active ingredients is how people irritate their faces. Whatever you normally apply goes on afterwards.

Then why do the eye-patch devices sell so well?

Because they feel good, they are affordable, the texture effect is real and small, and the before-and-after photos are taken at a different time of day, when everyone's under-eyes look better.

Will red light fade acne scars?

Rolling and boxcar scars are architecture; light does not rebuild them. The red-brown marks acne leaves behind fade on their own and faster with the actives above.

Does FDA clearance mean it works?

It means the maker showed the device is as safe as a similar cleared device. It is a safety and marketing threshold, not proof of efficacy, and plenty of good devices skip it.

Is a panel better than a mask?

For the body, yes, more area and more power. For the face, a mask that sits on the skin usually delivers a better dose than a panel across the room.

Do LED masks cause hyperpigmentation?

Not directly. Prolonged heat and irritation can, in skin prone to it. Short sessions on bare, cool skin are the way to avoid it.

What about hair-removal devices, are those the same?

No, and that is why we do not sell them. Intense pulsed light targets pigment and is genuinely unsafe on deep skin. Red and near-infrared do not work that way.

Not if the wattage buys area and even coverage. It is a waste if it buys intensity you then have to stand back from anyway.

Can you overdo it and damage skin?

Damage, no, at consumer powers. Waste time and possibly blunt the response, yes. Heat is the thing to watch, especially on skin prone to pigmenting.
